February is Age-Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month

AMD Month

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness among older Americans, but new treatments have dramatically changed the course of this disease over the last 10 years, making AMD more manageable than ever before. During AMD Awareness Month in February, the American Academy of Ophthalmology is reminding people with AMD that they can save their vision thanks to recent treatment advances, but early detection is a critical first step.

February is Age-Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month
The first signs of Age-related Macular Degeneration are typically discovered by an eye doctor in an annual dilated eye exam. They include the presence of drusen – tiny but visible heaps of cell waste on the surface of the retina – and pigment changes in the macula. Often these signs of AMD are present long before any changes are noticeable in a person’s vision.

About 90 percent of all people with Age-related Macular Degeneration have “dry” AMD, a condition in which layers of the macula (including the photoreceptors and the retinal pigment epithelium) get progressively thinner, functioning less and less as they do.

Dry AMD is also called non-neovascular AMD and non-exudative AMD because it does not involve the exuding – that is, leakage – of fluids from blood vessels.
